The images have hit Southeast Asia hard. During a major earthquake in Myanmar on Friday, March 28, a large area under construction completely collapsed in the Thai capital Bangkok. The event with a magnitude of 7.7 on the Richter scale was felt outside Myanmar, including in Thailand.
In the viral video that is now being shared en masse on social media, you see the moment when the building collapses. It concerns a thirty-storey building that was not yet under construction. According to local media, there were approximately 43 construction workers in and around the building at that time. Many of them are said to be trapped under the rubble. Many deaths have already been reported.
The impact is so great that the Thai government has officially designated Bangkok as the disaster area. The Thai prime minister has held an emergency meeting and rescue workers have been deployed en masse.
The earthquake had its epicenter in Myanmar and occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers. It was felt in Thailand, but also in Laos, Vietnam and some parts of India. Many deaths have also been reported in Myanmar itself. In Mandalay, a mosque collapsed and roads were badly damaged.
